Ground broken on landmark St Elizabeth Hospice in Gorleston

October 20, 2026

Construction has begun on a new specialist palliative care facility for the people of Great Yarmouth and Waveney.

We were delighted to attend the groundbreaking ceremony today (Tuesday 20th October 2026), as Suffolk-based Barnes Construction officially marked the start of work on site at St Elizabeth Hospice, Gorleston.

The first spade was put in the ground by members of the hospice team, including the charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Judi Newman, Chair of the Board, Ann Monks, and nurses, alongside project partners and Barnes Construction Joint Managing Director, Mark Hart.

Designed to provide specialist palliative care to the people of Great Yarmouth and Waveney, the new hospice will build on the charity’s existing services in the area.

Our team has worked on the scheme since 2024 alongside Norwich-based LSI Architects, providing multidisciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy.

Construction is expected to cost around £16 million and take up to two years to complete. A capital fundraising appeal will launch in the near future to support the build.

“Seeing the project transition from design to construction is a real milestone. We are thrilled to see the project move one step closer, and we’ve enjoyed playing our part in making the vision of a purpose-build hospice in Gorleston a reality.”
