A21 Landslide Incident Response

Hastings, East Sussex

In January 2023 the northbound carriageway of the A21 near Hastings was closed due to a landslide. We were appointed by MJ Church Group to provide Geo-environmental services.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

On January 25th 2023 the northbound carriage of the A21 near Hastings in East Sussex was closed due to a landslide. The A21 is a major road to London and the incident caused severe delays to road users.

Shortly after the event, National Highways appointed MJ Church Group to deliver incident response. As part of this response, we were contacted and subsequently appointed to provide a Geotechnical design solution and specialist technical advice to support the team dealing with the incident.

Due to the location of the works and the need for a quick solution, our Geo-environmental team recommended the use of a gabion basket retaining wall, eliminating the need to install a drainage system. The basket was then backfilled to ensure structural support and stability.

WHAT WE DID:

CONSTRUCTION STAGE

  • Temporary Works Design
  • Ground Investigation
  • Geotechnical Advice
  • On-site Monitoring and Sign-Off

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS / BENEFITS

  • Our recommendation of utilising a gabion basket retaining wall was a simple solution that enabled MJ Church to complete the repair work in just eight weeks, ensuring that the road was reopened in good time.
